Tommy Ashby, a high school senior with severe social anxiety, decides to step out of his comfort zone to learn 70’s disco dancing.
Hi-Glow Retro is an enormous ode to almost every teenage boy’s dream, but not without passing through the anxieties first. Directed by Alex Morsanutto and nicknaming this film his ‘sweet disco baby’, staggers us with a stylish and groovy dynamic flow while dazzling us with easy and punchy humour.
Hi-Glow Retro is a proof of concept short film for a feature film of the same name. I wrote this short film to generate buzz around the idea and hoping that it can act as a springboard for the larger project. The project was written in winter of 2014, but really got moving in March 2015 after I was able to bring my friend, Joe Walker, on to Executive Produce and finance the project. We filmed July 2015 and had our first film festival premiere April 2016 at Garden State Film Festival. We had a great festival run and I’m thankful to have such a supportive team involved such as EP Joe Walker, DP Sam Cutler-Kreutz, and lead actor Bryan Burton.
The storyline is somewhat obvious, and we get a clear hint of how the film’s going to turn out way before it happens, but the film’s slender wonder comes through its almost conspicuous subtleties, like the pubic hair trimming to name just one – highlighting the real awkwardness and high discoveries of the wonderful age. The rest just flows expectedly into place with its share of unexpected sub-moments, but it’s exactly what these kind of movie are meant to be. A great production with some charming acting to really make this an exquisitely fun watch!
